MATER PRIVATE CLINIC
FAST FACTS
THE DETAILS
"Their responsiveness is unmatched and the working relationships they develop with the whole project team in Mater have made the project collaborative and inclusive. They have brought to the project experience in cancer care environments and a passion to design patient-centric interior environment." - Dr Christopher Leon, Mater Private Hospital
At the fulcrum between the public and private sectors of the Mater Hospital at South Brisbane, the Mater Private Clinic is the centrepiece of a new urban presentation to the Stanley Street side of the inner city hospital complex.
Integrated with the new busway station, the Clinic building provides a new street frontage for the private hospital and a connection point to the main campus. New inpatient accommodation, operating theatres, day procedure unit and private medical suites are housed within the new facilities.
Elements of the new Clinic continue the previously established masonry themed private hospital. A lightweight metallic façade in turn contrasts with the brick forms to create a contemporary 21st century aesthetic. The metallic skin compliments the technically complex yet visually simple link building spanning 35m across Water Street supported by 4 steel trusses.
The acute corner site identified in the town plan as a significant corner, has been exemplified by the curve of the triangular plan of the main grounded building and capped by a reflective glass cylinder and glowing blue light. The tightness of the curve is reinforced by the strong horizontal forms of the external sunshading devices.
The sophisticated and warm interior takes its reference from the traditional elegance of the Mater Private Hospital to which major corridors link. The use of sensuous curves, quilted walls and warm dark timber features create a sense of comfort, richness and confidence whilst reflecting contemporary surrounds.
