With recent residential development growth in the Edmonton region south of Cairns, a new extended hour Youth Care Service was required to meet growing need. The opportunity to couple this service with the newly established Mackillop Catholic College provided scope to expand its already thriving OSHC amenity. Catholic Early Learning and Care, an established early learning provider in Cairns approached Peddle Thorp to deliver the project from concept design through to completion.

The facility caters for 80 children ranging in age from six weeks to five years. Facility spaces and amenities including baby rest, change and preparation areas flank the central double height light filled common play area. This central zone links directly to the kitchen and external spaces providing for accessible and freeing movement play. Administration and staff facilities adjoin student play areas maximising passive visibility. All spaces priorities acoustic control, light penetration and natural ventilation. Colour selections, finishes and materials achieve neutrality and sense of fun as a back drop to the Centres daily activities.
