Designed by Peddle Thorp Far North, this re-purposed teaching space was created for a brand new course offered by James Cook University the ‘Internet of Things". The result is a fused series of utilitarian creative workspaces that encourage students and staff to interact and share ideas.

This fit-out provides for the next generation putting new ideas into action, and providing open and flexible teaching and learning spaces, suitable for a wide variety of tasks. The architect’s approach to the project was to reduce the number of apparent walls, to encourage openness, teamwork and transparency. Those walls that remained purposely became active and writable - an integral part of what the brief had called for.

The fit-out is pared back and simple. The existing suspended ceilings have disappeared, with new polished concrete floors and plywood furniture completing the picture. Highly textured herringbone carpet and soft furnishings to the seating areas provides a playful graphic contrast.

The idea of the interior was to encourage interaction and creativity. The spaces that have been created house and nurture this in a highly effective and encouraging manner.
