FAST FACTS

THE DETAILS

Peddle Thorp were engaged to deliver a new 32 Bed Ward fitout and associated works; including a Kitchen upgrade, a new staff dining space and relocation of the Executive Administration offices into new prefabricated buildings.

The new ward Fitout (Ward 3B) was on the top level of an existing building and replaced the existing administration area, this bought such challenges as reducing the existing fire compartment size, construction access to level 3 through the external wall, dealing with new wet areas and falls on an existing slab.

Ward 3B is named the GLAD unit (Gentlemen and Ladies Ageing with Dignity), the clinical design focused on innovative ideas to make the hospital environment more comfortable for patients. This was done by the introduction of timber look vinyl flooring in ward rooms, communal dining and lounge areas for patients, and the introduction of the Schiavello Mediwall system. This hid all the services at the bedhead and through the use of colour was used as a room and bed identifier for patients.

The ward also had a secure DAFU (Delirium and Falls Unit) Unit for higher risk patients. There was a strong focus in this secure area to use wall graphics and displays for the patients to feel relaxed and limit disorientation. The entries to each patient room had a different colour door and the exits of the department had a change in floor colour and landscape wall graphic to hide the exits. Display boxes housed antiques and other items for patients to relate to and be a conversation starter.

The relocated administration went into a series of connected prefabricated buildings all made in modules off site, transported to site and connected, this included a two-storey building. This allowed quick construction time to move admin out and commence the main works. It also limited the impact on the site as they were all raised up on a steel structure to match the existing hospital level, above flood levels and allow overland flow to continue underneath. A similar design philosophy for a staff dining facility was incorporated, which was prefabricated off site and dropped into an existing courtyard area by a crane over the top of the kitchen and services building.
